CALL FOR PAPERS: Inside Illuminations: Art Technical Research & the Illuminated Manuscript, Brussels, Thursday 5 June 2014, Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA), Lecture Room.
Researching the components and technology of Western Manuscript Illuminations in the laboratory has become more widespread during the last decade. The great diversity of techniques, materials and tools used by illuminators to illustrate and decorate texts has become a challenging topic for scholars of manuscripts and medieval painting. Art technical research on illuminated manuscripts provides insights into provenance, workshop practice and the interrelationships between painting on parchment and painting on panel, wall and cloth. For conservators of manuscripts, moreover, collaboration with laboratories of scientific imaging and non-destructive material testing has become an important factor in making decisions about treatments and interventions.
The conference Inside Illuminations is intended to advance interdisciplinary research on technical art history and the medieval illuminated manuscript by providing a forum for scholars working on specific manuscripts, on illuminators’ practice and on recently developed research tools and databases.
Confirmed speakers are Nancy Turner (J.P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles), Stella Panayotova and Paola Ricciardi (The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge), Doris Oltrogge and Robert Fuchs (Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences), Christina Duffy (British Library), Maria João Melo (New University of Lisbon), Aurélie Mounier (IRAMAT-CRPAA, Bordeaux), Anne Dubois (Université catholique de Louvain, FRS-FNRS), Lieve Watteeuw (Illuminare, KU Leuven, University of Leuven) and Marina Van Bos (Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage).
On Friday morning 6 June 2014, there will be an optional visit for maximum 15 participants to the Manuscript Department of the Royal Library of Belgium or to the Leuven University Library. During the one-day conference there will be a poster presentation of research projects in the field of technical manuscript studies (Call for Posters).
We kindly invite you to submit an abstract of 250 words and a short cv (mail abstracts to Marina Van Bos).
The conference is organized by KIK-IRPA (the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, Brussels), Illuminare (Centre for the Study of Medieval Art, KU Leuven) and UCL (Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve).
The Proceedings of the conference will be published in the Series Corpus of Illuminated Manuscripts of Illuminare, KU Leuven (Peeters Publishers, Leuven).
Deadline: 3 February 2014.
